Ladder for the Black Country and Ladder for Staffordshire have created 650 apprenticeships between them as part of a determined bid to tackle youth unemployment.

The Staffordshire version launched just two months ago and has already created 150 positions.

The Prime Minister said: "I'm delighted to give my support to the Ladder for Staffordshire campaign and to all those involved.

"Apprenticeships are absolutely essential in providing the skills and training required, helping Britain compete in the global economic race.

"The Government will deliver three million more apprenticeships by 2020 as part of our long term economic plan, giving young people the skills to succeed.

"It is great to see such enthusiasm in Staffordshire for apprenticeships and the fantastic opportunities they offer."

Cannock Chase MP Amanda Milling added: "It is fantastic news that the Prime Minister has thrown his weight behind our campaign.

"This endorsement is the icing on the cake after the success of hitting the 150 apprenticeship mark in just two months.

"I will continue to promote the Ladder for Staffordshire at every available opportunity both in Parliament and at home."

The first scheme, Ladder for the Black Country, was set up by the Express & Star with Walsall based training provider PTP and charity The Vine Trust, with support from Walsall Council and the Black Country Chamber of Commerce.

It has since gone on to create 500 positions as firms signed up to take on new recruits.

The Black Country previously had the highest levels of youth unemployment in England.

In the first two months since Ladder for Staffordshire launched more than 30 firms agreed to support it and create jobs.

Companies include tool suppliers Screwfix, which pledged 32 apprenticeships, and ceramics company Portmeirion, creating 26 positions.

The Duke of York is patron of the two campaigns.
