Staff at Wolverhampton Grammar School pulled in a 'ringer' for their annual cricket match against the school first XI.[gallery]

But even with the assistance of former England Test star Devon Malcolm, the teachers – or Headmistress' XI – still couldn't teach the students a lesson.

Their total of 175 all out fell seven runs short of the school team's 182-6, and headmistress Mrs Kathy Crewe-Read presented the trophy to the winning team, who were delighted to have put one over on their teachers.

Fast bowler Malcolm, who played 40 Test matches for England between 1989 and 1997, taking 128 wickets, batted and bowled in the match.

He was invited to join in by Theo King, who is on the PE staff at the Grammar School.

The pair became friends after Mr King – who played at junior level for Warwickshire and Worcestershire and in the Birmingham League for West Bromwich Dartmouth – was part of the backroom set-up with the England squad in the 1990s.

His duties included laying out kit for the team, organising complimentary tickets and sending down some balls in net practice.

Malcolm, who played county cricket for Derbyshire from 1984 to 1997 and had spells at Leicestershire and Northamptonshire before retiring in 2003, enjoyed taking part in the contest.

He said: "I still play in charity matches, for the Lord's Taverners, and visit schools and clubs to do masterclasses.

"I was happy to accept

Theo's offer to play and see what cricketing talent there is at his school."

The match was one of several played during the final week of term at the school grounds off Compton Road before the students break for the summer holidays.
