Having powered their way to NFC2 championship glory last year with 13 wins from 13 games, the Steelers have quickly adapted to the step up in class with successive victories over The Ouse Valley Eagles and the Birmingham Bulls.

Now they will hit the road as they bid to conquer table-toppers Nottingham Caesars on Sunday.

"The Nottingham Caesars represent another strong challenge for us in this division," said head coach Jay Alexander.

"They were a Premiership club just a couple of seasons ago, and have got themselves off to a flyer this season with two convincing wins.

"They currently sit at the top of the table alongside us, the winner of this one will take sole possession of the top spot, so all involved are aware of how much is at stake here."

The trip to Nottingham kick-starts a testing run of away fixtures with Alexander looking to be in contention for a play-off place when his side return to their Tipton Sports Academy base.

"This is the start of five consecutive away games for us, so while we've known all along there would be no easy games at this level, we now find ourselves entering the most important part of our season," added Alexander, whose men have a new training facility at Wednesbury Rugby Club this season.

"We will need strong performances and the right results to give ourselves any chance of coming back to TSA in July with a play-off place to play for."

Alexander, who saw leading receiver Drew Newiss depart in the off-season, has been pleased with the determination shown by his side during the opening two fixtures as they saw off The Ouse Valley Eagles and Birmingham Bulls.

"New faces have stepped up and matched the efforts of our returning players, and while the performances haven't yet been as comprehensive as last season, fortunately we've still managed to make some crucial plays when it's mattered most," he said.

Steelers' opening game saw them concede an early touchdown to the Ouse Valley Eagles before responding with 24 unanswered points.

Win number two came against local rivals Birmingham Bulls with the Steelers edging a tense game 18-14.
