It came over neighbours Cheshire in their opening group match in the Unicorns Knockout Trophy.

An outstanding fifth-wicket partnership of 171 between Meakins colleagues Peter Wilshaw and Danny Brierley enabled Staffs to post a daunting total of 313-5 from their 45 overs, in a rain-affected match.

Cheshire struggled throughout their innings but some lusty blows towards the end took them to a total of 263-8.

Staffs captain Kadeer Ali was delighted with his team's performance: "It is a brilliant start for us and the way Peter and Danny batted was just incredible.

"We knew we had to set a solid platform because there's a lot of fire-power in our side.

"Getting 313 was fantastic and really put the pressure on them. I thought we bowled really well early on with Greg Willott and Brinder"

Staffs are next in action against Herefordshire, who defeated Shropshire in their opening game, at Himley on Sunday May 8, 11am start.
