Review: High Society, Wolverhampton Grand Theatre

The Wolverhampton Grand Theatre pulled out all the stops last night with a Hollywood glamour-themed evening to celebrate the opening of Cole Porter's High Society, complete with theatre goers in evening wear, furs and diamonds, drinking cocktails on the red carpet.

There's nothing quite like playing to a house packed with friends and family, as Sophie Bould from Church Aston in Shropshire discovered, appearing as leading lady, Tracey Lord.

Sophie was guaranteed a warm welcome and deserved the applause for an exceptional portrayal of the heiress, who on the eve of her wedding has second thoughts when her first husband, Dexter, appears. Sophie commanded the stage with pure sophistication, supported by a superbly talented cast who sing and tap dance their way through the show.

Michael Praed wowed the ladies with a suave, self-assured performance as Dexter, while Daniel Boys was in fine voice as reporter, Mike Connor. The show was almost, but not quite, stolen by 17-year-old Katie Lee as Dinah, who is one to watch in the future.

Classic tunes included Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Well Did You Evah? Completely unmissable.

Runs until Saturday.
