The 25-year-old's track, Hideaway, toppled dance duo Sigma, to claim her first ever UK number one single.

Hidaeway sold more than 136,000 copies in the UK over the last seven days, according to the Official Charts Company.

The track is now the third fastest selling single of 2014 so far, sitting behind Clean Bandit's debut chart-topper Rather Be featuring Jess Glynne and Pitbull's, Timber, featuring Ke$ha.

Kiesza said: "Being Number 1 is the most amazing feeling ever. I just want to say thank you to everybody who's supported it. I never expected this at all when I created Hideaway; it's amazing to see people come out of the woodwork and fall in love with it, so thank you!"

The singer, who is also a classically trained ballerina, first realised she wanted a career in music while working as a code breaker for the Royal Canadian Navy.

"Music was always a part of my life, but it was more of a hobby," she added. "When I started sailing on large vessels, people would bring instruments onto the ship and start jamming, and that led me to start song writing. That was the first time that I realised I had a natural instinct for it, and it just led me down this whole musical road that I'm on."

The second highest new entrant in the chart was DJ and producer Shift K3y, who also claimed his first top 10 hit with his single, Touch.

John Legend's All Of Me was at number four in the singles chart, while Aloe Blacc's recent chart-topper, The Man, dropped two places to number five, said the Official Charts Company.

Elyar Fox narrowly missed out on a top 10 placing for the follow-up to his January Top 5 hit Do It All Over Again. The London teenager's new track, A Billion Girls, debuted at number 11 on the Official Singles Chart.

In the album charts, Paolo Nutini ended the Kaiser Chiefs' two-week stand at number 1 with his third full-length album, Caustic Love.

The record is the singer's second chart-topper. after 2009's Sunny Side Up, and has become the fastest-selling artist album of 2014 so far, selling over 100,000 copies in a week.

The 27-year-old beat the opening week tally of previous record holder Sam Bailey's The Power Of Love, which sold nearly 73,000 copies in its seven days on sale in March.

Meanwhile, The Vamps claimed this week's second highest new album entry with their debut offering, Meet The Vamps, at number two.

The top five was completed by Paloma Faith's, A Perfect Contradiction in third, John Legend's Love In The Future at number 4 and Kaiser Chiefs' Education, Education, Education And War, in fifth place.
