The star launched herself 148 metres down from the 31st floor of the central London landmark in aid of Sport Relief and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, along with adventurer Bear Grylls and swimmer Mark Foster.

When she was safely on the ground, she took to Twitter and told fans: "G reat monday morning! @sportrelief thank god the marines were at each end of the rope".

Helen, who now works as a presenter for BT Sport, spent five years on Blue Peter, during which she canoed down the Amazon, performed a high-wire walk between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station and travelled 500 miles across Antarctica.

She ended her stint on the long-running children's show by attempting the Royal Marines Yomp - a 30-mile march across Dartmoor with a 32lb backpack under eight hours.
