The Kaiser Chiefs frontman was approached about the job two years ago but admitted producers decided to pick Danny O'Donoghue from The Script instead because he "asked too many questions".

"At the time, I was a bit snobby about those kind of shows. But the fact is, Saturday night, I'm not out in some bar in Hoxton. I'm watching The X Factor," he told Reveal.

"I don't think I'd be a very good songwriter if I couldn't enjoy things that 99 per cent of the UK enjoys."

Ricky said his band "weren't 100 per cent comfortable" with it when he was offered the role on the panel again, where he sits alongside Sir Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue and Will.i.am.

He talked them around it because he thought it would be handy to help promote their new album Education, Education, Education And Wars, which is to be released on March 31, and admitted that he likes the idea of being the first 'indie' star on the show.

"It's a game-changer, isn't it? If I was the second person ever to have done it, I'd probably have said no," he said.

The Voice continues on Saturdays on BBC One.
