Dozens of music fans queued at the Midland Box Office in Wolverhampton from the early hours to get their hands on tickets for the October 16 show at the city's Civic Hall.

The Modfather whose hits with The Jam included Eton Rifles and Start, will return to the venue as part of a 10-gig tour. More than 25 people were waiting outside the Midland Box Office in Queen Square, Wolverhampton, ahead of tickets going on sale at 9am today.

One dedicated fan, Paul James, set his alarm to get up at 7am after finishing his night shift at 2.30am to drive over from Castle Bromwich for tickets. Mr James, a father of two, from Meriden Drive, Kingshurst, said he had everything Weller had ever released on vinyl and CD. The 46-year-old engineering worker added: "I just had a power nap and drove over. I'd normally stay in bed longer but you've got to do it haven't you? I'm a big fan. He's just class."

Albert Harding, aged 55, from Telford, who had worked for Premier Foods for 25 years, said this would be the fourth time he had seen Weller live. He said: "He's just the Modfather. What he did for music with The Jam and The Style Council was massive."

Luke Kilvert, a process operator with McCain in Wombourne, who lives in Wolverhampton, said he queued early to buy tickets for his girlfriend Jess's parents. The 19-year-old said he met Jess eight weeks ago and was buying the tickets because her parents Lewis and Steve, who live in Pattingham, were long-time followers – with a giant poster of the star above their staircase at home.

Mr Kilvert said: "They're massive fans so they asked me if I could go early for them."

Wolverhampton Civic Hall spokesman Jonn Penney said all 3,000 tickets had been sold by 9.30am today and added: "We are delighted with the ticket sales and we are very pleased as he has hand picked the venues for this tour so he obviously has a love for the city."

Civic general manager Mark Blackstock added: "Paul Weller obviously likes Wolverhampton."
