Review: The Darkness, Wolverhampton Civic Hall

Pounding rock tunes sprinkled with theatrics and lycra – The Darkness had arrived in Wolverhampton.

The band burst on to stage like a group of rock newcomers hungry for success. And they didn’t let the energy levels slip for a second.

You certainly couldn’t accuse The Darkness of not giving it 100 per cent – and then some.

It may have been years since they first burst on to the scene, but last night’s gig had all the hallmarks of a band still loving the buzz of performing.

Eccentric frontman Justin Hawkins, wearing a black and white striped catsuit, showcased his trademark showmanship complete with head banging, hip thrusting and split leaps. Elements of Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury in his over-the-top stage persona, the star put in a pitch-perfect performance.

The crowd went wild for a performance of I Believe In a Thing Called Love before the band walked off stage and returned for an encore that included a cover of Radiohead’s Street Spirit (Fade Out) and ended with Love on the Rocks With No Ice.

Material from the band’s new album Hot Cakes was showcased along with their greatest hits.

Circus act. Were funny in 2003, lame by 2004, just tragic now.

pete

oh di dums looks like your alone with your miserable point of view

Bertie the Bunyip

Well, Petey my boyboy, I'd rather be alone....in a cave....trapped under a rock....forever, than endure a darkness gig, quite frankly.

Can be arranged. There are plenty in Kinver!

Bertie,

You are completely wrong, they weren't remotely funny in 2003

Bertie the bunyip

Ah c'mon Andy, they are rubbish, but don't be too harsh. Don't tell me that you didn't crack a smile the first time you heard "GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY WOMAN, MOTHERF----" sung in falsetto

The gig was absolutely fantastic, Justin playing the guitar behind his back amongst the crowd was spectacular. One of the most energetic and best performances I have ever seen.

I was at last night’s gig and thought it was excellent, having seen The Darkness previously at the NEC and more recently supporting Lady Gaga.

For those who attended last night I was the ‘guy in the white shirt’ Justin referred to and I thank him for his respectful comments. Along with the band's efforts overall, Justin's voice and guitar display was very good, particularly when being carried through the crowd, which is something akin to what I remember when I was on tour with AC/DC and Diamond Head in 1980, when Bon Scott did the same with Angus Young at Southampton Gaumont.

For me a night to remember, so many thanks to The Darkness.

A big thumbs up to Ian F and the band. Great performance and banter. Love on the Rocks really rocked. Pity it had to finish.
