The authority's cabinet committee approved £54,000 funding for the Light House Media Centre, including £43,000 rent, leaving an actual payment of £11,000. Next year the council plans to cover the venue's rent only.

Finance chiefs say the Light House plays a key role in supporting Wolverhampton in drawing people into the city to spend money but says it needs to become financially independent in the long term.

Staff at the venue have urged people to help cover the lost £100,000 council grant by turning out to events. The charity, based at the authority-owned Chubb Buildings, needs £100,000 to replace the grant cut by the council.

The venue is hoping it can recover the cost through increased attendances, sponsorship and donations.
