More than a thousand dogs descended on Staffordshire for the annual National Terrier Show.

The only dog competition in the calendar dedicated to terriers, dozens of different breeds turned up at the County Showground in Stafford.

The dogs were competing for a variety of awards, judged by a panel, with the prestigious best in show award going to a Lakeland Terrier called Alan from Uttoxeter.

It is Alan's second title in the space of just a few weeks after also scooping a best in group title at Crufts at the NEC in Birmingham last month. The National Terrier club confirmed it had 1,200 dogs entered for its event with exhibitors coming from all over the UK and even abroad.

Stuart Plane, the secretary of the club, hailed the event and thanked all the staff for their hard work.

He said: "It was a huge success and we are proud to say that every breed of terrier was represented.

"It is our only competition just for terriers, which we hold every year.

"It was actually our 100th show this past weekend so we had a dedication to every past best in show winner.

"The whole team worked very hard and I want to thank them."

As well as the best in show category scooped by Alan, there was also a best in puppy award won by a wheaten terrier called Obi on Saturday.

Winners are picked against a strict criteria on what defines the breed, set by the Kennel Club.
