Former Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Brookside star Sam said: "We are looking for variety acts, so it can be anything from magicians to dance groups, singers to plate spinners.

"This is the first time we are doing this so we are going to see how it goes. It would be great if we could do it several times a year."

He added: "It is a great venue and we want to showcase that."

The actor now works as an agent, and will be on the lookout for acts to promote. Anyone over the age of 10 can enter the talent competition, and they don't have to be from the Brierley Hill area but are encouraged to travel from far and wide.

Auditions for the competition will take place at the Brierley Hill Civic Hall on July 26. The judges will then make their decisions on which performers have successfully made the line-up for a show at the same venue on August 12.

Tickets for the final show will cost £5, and the winner of the contest will receive a prize fund and the chance to perform at other events.

Entries must be received in advance by contacting the civic hall on 01384 573381, or at www.bhillcivic.co.uk
