Banksy-style art appears at Wolverhampton pub

It's on a wall but very definitely off-the-wall. This image of a street cleaner sweeping up a Union Jack flag is the latest piece of street art to perk up the Wolverhampton landscape.

The Merry Boys pub on Willenhall Road has been given the Banksy-inspired treatment by the Black Country brewery that almost shares the artist's name. Banks's owner Marston's has commissioned a series of paintings in the style of the famous graffiti artist as a marketing ploy.

Merry Boys manager Allan Price, aged 55, said customers have been scratching their heads over the meaning of the image – at least, those that have noticed it have.

Despite the painting's position right beside the entrance, not many punters have spotted the colourful illustration. "It hasn't provided much of a talking point yet because of the winter evenings which means it's dark by the time most people come in," said Mr Price.

"We're not quite sure what it means but I'm sure there'll be a few witty comments about it." The painting is among a handful that have been commissioned by Marston's.
