The self-titled Lazy Cow, who later helped to switch on the city's Christmas lights, was given a tour of the Queen Street offices by chief reporter Alex Ross.

She introduced herself to staff in the different departments including editorial and advertising before settling herself in the editor's office.

Over coffee and a biscuit, she said she was looking forward to the performances, which start on December 10.

But she joked she was still planning on taking it easy and had arranged to have a bed in her dressing room so she could nap between scenes.

Lounging in the editor's chair, she said: "I'm playing the Lazy Empress – I think it will suit me very well. I'm going to have loads of slaves around me, waiting on me hand and foot. And I'm going to be living in a palace – so, you know, very much really what my life's like already.

When asked what it was like to be working with the rest of the Aladdin cast which includes X Factor winner Joe McElderry and soap star Lisa Riley, she quipped: "I don't like that word 'work'."

But she then added: "They're lovely people."
