Cannock filmmaker's travels on show

From Cannock to California – one filmmaker who swapped Staffordshire for the States in the 1980s has returned to film his original stomping ground.

Dave Cutler was born in Cannock, grew up in Coven and attended Lakefield Road School in Wednesfield.

After leaving school, he received both his A and B Certificates in Electrical Engineering from the former Polytechnic College of Wolverhampton University.

He went on to become a Certified Electrical Engineer working in show groups on the likes of children's Television programme Tiswas.

It was during the 1980s he decided he would move to the USA due to what he saw as more opportunity.

Talking with a Midlands-Californian hybrid accent, Dave said: "There was a wide array of things to do in America, compared to the opportunities I had at home - I wanted to see so much and California was the place to do what I wanted.

"It has the weather and it certainly has the opportunity."

Dave set up Cutler Video Productions, his own video production company, where he went on to direct hundreds of TV shows and commercials.

His latest travel show, Outta Town Adventures, sees Dave and his girlfriend Bea Broda, an established travel journalist from Canada, explore a wide array of worldwide locations from Uzbekistan to Rwanda to China.

He said: "We'd started filming in all these locations and I wanted to film something in the UK and I always found Bridgnorth interesting.

"It's just a quirky place, I really wanted to see what it looked look now.

"We flew into Manchester, then drove to Wolverhampton where I stayed - I hadn't been here for 30 odd years, so it was good to see some old faces and places.

"We filmed in Bridgnorth, Birmingham and Scotland – where Prince Charles happened to be, so he'll feature in the new series. The weather wasn't so bad.

"I was just getting used to driving on the left, then we got to a roundabout and it was like, 'now what do we do'?

"There are so many roundabouts now, they just seem to pop up everywhere.

"The measurement are all in metric too, so working out gas prices was a challenge."
