Councillors concerned about the effect it will have on the health of people in the town have hit out at the news.

Latest figures show more than two thirds of the population in the borough are obese or overweight.

Conservative Councillor Rose Martin, Walsall Council's former health boss, said: "This is not really going to help is it.

"People need to take responsibility for their own health and be educated around healthy eating properly.

"A burger is a treat and if you have one it should be around a proper balanced diet. We all enjoy a treat but not all the time."

In January a Walsall resident made a sign welcoming people to the town, which read: "Welcome to Walsall land of the fatties, be nice or be dinner."
