  • Don’t leave your packing to the last minute. Make a list of what you need to take and start getting items together in advance so you don’t forget anything. This will help your move go smoother.

  • To avoid homesickness decorate your room with familiar things from home such as photographs of your friends and family. Make sure your room is as comfortable as possible.

  • Get to know your new town or city. Pick up a map or check Google Maps on your phone and explore your new surroundings. Make sure you know where the Students Union, library and medical centre can be found as well as the nearest shop.

  • Join a university club or society. This is a great way to make friends but also a chance for you to enjoy a hobby or find a new one. Groups will normally showcase their activities during Freshers’ Week.

  • Work out a budget and stick to it. It can help to get your cash out at the beginning of each week so you can keep track of your spending. Student loans are paid at the start of every term so you need to make your money last.

  • Take advantage of student discounts offered by shops and restaurants by getting an NUS card. Get a 16-25 Railcard if you are likely to be travelling by train to see family or friends.

  • Go for big food shops. Make the most of bulk buys as this will cost you less in the long run. You can always split the cost with flatmates.

  • Don’t take too many notes in lectures. If you try to write down every thing your tutor is saying then you’re not going to be listening and taking it in. Try to pick out the main points as this will be easier to work from later.

  • Wash your hands to avoid the dreaded ‘fresher’s flu’. It’s common to catch a cold during the first few weeks so be vigilant.

  • Finally, go in with a positive attitude. From meeting your flatmates for the first time to sitting in your first lecture, be determined to make the most of every experience.
