The survey carried out by the National Trust, in conjunction with YouGov Plc, asked people in the West Midlands what they felt were the elements of a great British summer day out.

Of course, spending time outdoors in the sunshine is one of the main things that people enjoy in July and August (79 per cent) but over half (54 per cent) of those questioned had fond memories of summer days out in all kinds of weather. So come rain or shine it's still possible to have a great day out.

Getting outdoors and closer to nature is important to 59 per cent of people on an enjoyable day out in summer.

The same proportion (59 per cent) also associated the sound of birds singing with summer and 27 per cent tend to do some wildlife spotting on a day out.
