A festive market is set to come to West Bromwich this Christmas, under plans to boost town centre trade.

Proposals for the Christmas festivities in the town have been revealed in a new markets masterplan.

The document also discloses how the authority is planning to host speciality markets over four-day periods throughout the year.

Bosses are seeking to make use of Sandwell Valley as well as the town centre for the festive celebrations and they are hopeful a Christmas market will help draw in the crowds and become a favourite in a similar fashion to the much larger-scale event in Birmingham.

Details of what will be included in the market have not yet been revealed but would likely include various stalls selling festive themed goods and produce.

The annual market in Birmingham city centre has become a massive hit in recent years with the German beer and bratwursts particularly popular.

Sandwell Council leader Steve Eling said the scheme was part of a vision to improve what is on offer to the public in the borough.

He said: "We are looking to generate more income through local markets and bring people into West Bromwich as part of the process."

In addition to the Christmas market, the council is also investigating holding regular markets during the rest of the year. A new weekly market has recently launched in Oldbury and bosses are keen to hold more across the borough.
