Buyers sold on one-off Stafford market

The organisers of a one-off Stafford market hope it will become a weekly fixture in the town after a successful first outing.

More than 50 stalls were pitched up by traders in Market Square outside Shire Hall on Wednesday in an attempt to rejuvenate the town centre.

Organisers of the event, Bescot Promotions, have confirmed the market will return to the town next week but managing director Steve Evans hopes it will still be there in the months to come.

He said: "The customers came out to it. It was really busy and a real good day. Reports from traders were that there were more people than normal in the town than there usually are on a Wednesday.

"The butcher had a really good day, traders on the whole had a really good day and the weather was with us, which helped. But the people really took to it and feedback has been really positive.

"And it's great to say that the majority of traders are coming back because they really liked it.

"The market will be there again next week – that's what they're asking – for the market to be just one part of the regeneration from the market square end of the town."

Some stallholders from the town's indoor market, which is shut on Wednesdays, took up the opportunity to set up in the centre of town.

The £70 million investment to rejuvenate the Riverside part of Stafford saw the opening of a 1,000-space multi-storey car park in March.

Mr Evans added: "We hope it will become a weekly thing."
