The initiative is part of the celebrations ahead of the county's first-ever Staffordshire Day on Sunday.

It is set to become an annual fixture on Staffordshire's calendar, attracting more visitors to the area and helping residents show their pride in their county.

The Selfie for Staffordshire day encourages people to take a video or photo of themselves explaining how great they think the county is in front of a Staffordshire Day banner.

Anyone that enters is in with a chance of winning family outings to attractions in the county. To enter, people must share the photograph on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #StaffordshireDay or email it to info@enjoystaffordshire.com.

Prizes will be awarded at random with larger value prizes awarded for video message submissions.

Ahead of the big day, Councillor Mark Winnington, vice-chairman of Destination Staffordshire which is are behind the campaign, said: "With less than a week to go to our first-ever Staffordshire Day, we are all getting very excited about the celebrations.

"We don't often shout about the many great things about Staffordshire, so having this day will help us tell the world about what a great place it really is. There are lots of organisations and companies on board now and lots of events taking place right across the county."

The date, chosen by the public last year, marks the anniversary of the creation of Staffordshire's world-famous Wedgwood pottery company in 1759.

And, as well as a host of events and special offers from many tourism attractions on the day, residents are being encouraged to get involved and organise their own community activities.

In Cannock, the Museum of Cannock Chase will be celebrating Staffordshire's history and legacy, with arts and crafts on a Staffordshire theme, and music and dance reflecting the area and its folklore. There will also be a range of stalls and displays from history groups, libraries, coal mining historical societies and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty unit.
