The 64-year-old former Trapeze and Deep Purple star from Cannock is re-uniting with Dudley-born drummer Jason Bonham, 49, son of late Led Zeppelin star John.

Guitarist Joe Bonamassa is also back on board the band which split in 2013 after releasing three albums, along with keyboard player Derke Sherinian.

Hughes announced on Twitter: "Preparing to re-launch Rocket Ship BCC in 2017." A photograph of the band accompanied it.

He is back in the UK with his mother Sheila to attend the funeral of his father William which is taking place at St Luke's Church in Cannock today.

His father died in a care home aged 90 on April 8 – the day he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the United States. Record producer Kevin Shirley has also confirmed he will be working with the reunited BCC next year. He said on Facebook: "We're refurbishing the fuel tanks and refitting the rocket. Getting ready for takeoff in 2017 again, and I'm fired up … Who's ready for another dose of BCC!?" On his Facebook page, Bonham posted a photo of Black Country Communion with the caption "2017!!!"
