The 65-year-old turned up for the glitzy awards night dressed in a glamorous sparkly blue gown, complemented by an even sparklier pair of diamond earrings, borrowed for the occasion.

But when the actress went on stage to accept the Outstanding British Film award for her latest film Brooklyn, one of them was missing.

She admitted the earring was 'probably worth more' than her home.

She said: "These earrings are borrowed and they are probably the same price as my house. And as I got up on stage I realised one of them was not there.

"Somebody's found a bit of it, but even that is probably worth more than my house, so I need to look around."

Baftas 2016

The Revenant ruled this year's Baftas, winning three of the biggest awards including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

The outdoor epic was named best film, while Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu received the best director gong.

DiCaprio, 41, hailed the influence of British actors on his career, thanking his co-star Tom Hardy and sent happy birthday wishes to his mother as he collected his award.

DiCaprio beat last year's winner Eddie Redmayne, who was nominated for The Danish Girl, as well as Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon and Bryan Cranston.

Mexican director Inarritu described his win as "a true honour" and paid tribute to the film's cast, led by DiCaprio.

The 52-year-old, who won the best director Oscar in 2015 for Birdman, was presented with his Bafta by actor Stanley Tucci.

Brie Larson was named best actress for her leading role in claustrophobic drama Room.

The American, who was the overwhelming favourite for the award, was unable to attend the event because she was filming elsewhere.

Kate Winslet beat Julie Walters to win best supporting actress in Steve Jobs; Best supporting actor was Mark Rylance for Bridge Of Spies; Outstanding British film was Brooklyn; Best documentary was Amy; Best animated film was Inside Out.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens won the award for Special visual effects while its star John Boyega won the EE Bafta Rising Star Award.
