Auschwitz drawings on display in Dudley

Poignant and dark drawings of Auschwitz by a Black Country artist are being displayed at Dudley College's Broadway Campus, in the run-up to the borough's Holocaust Memorial Service.

Stourbridge-based artist Robert Perry created the pieces during a two-week trip to Auschwitz in April 1997.

Setting off with only his drawing and painting equipment, cameras, a phrase-book and a map, Robert headed for Auschwitz with no knowledge of Poland and 'not knowing what to expect'.

Dudley North MP Ian Austin first saw some of Robert's work exhibited at Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, but invited him to team up with the college and have his Holocaust work displayed there. The borough's annual memorial service will take place at the college's Broadway campus on January 29, at 12.30pm, where Holocaust survivor Susan Pollack will speak about her experience in a Nazi concentration camp.

Robert said: "Auschwitz is a very moving and grim place, it sobers you up as soon as you set your eyes on it. Everybody should visit Auschwitz at least once in their lifetime. I've drawn many things over the years but these have to be some of my darkest pieces of work."
