Photo captures spirit of Charlie Chaplin

Moustache, bowler hat and walking stick - there is no mistake who the famous comic actor is in this picture.

Set in a cobblestone setting, Charlie Chaplain looks relaxed in this picture, one of many taken by Cannock Photographic Society over the past year.

The image, captured by Paul Hassell, is on display at the Chasewater Innovation Centre, along with 217 other prints from 28 artists.

The club's chairman, John Cartlidge, said: "It's a wonderful composition.

"The picture captures the character of Charlie Chaplin in an appropriate setting. It's a lovely quality print and it has the impact of a well-known figure.

"You know it's not Chaplin, but it's got the essence there. Paul has captured the spirit."

The club's 58th annual exhibition, which opened on Sunday, is free to see. Last year, around 5,000 people visited.

Mr Cartlidge said: "It looks superb. I've been a member for 30 years, and this is possibly the we've ever had. The quality is outstanding.

"We have landscapes, portraits, still life, action, sport – all the genres are covered."

The exhibition doubles as a celebration after the photographic society came third out of 1,000 clubs across the country in the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain National Print Competition.

They were beaten by joint winner Stafford Photographic Society by a single point.

A local competition, hosted by Cannock Photographic Society, will take place next week.

More than 10 clubs, including Stafford, will take part in the competition at Longford Social Club, Wellington Drive on November 11.

Entry is £2.50 and the evening will begin at 7.45pm.
