Diwali lights up Wolverhampton

Blakenhall's Phoenix Park hosted a fun fair, musicians, dancers, illuminations and a spectacular fireworks display to mark the event.

Around 1,000 people attended throughout the day, with the fun starting at 3pm and going on until 9pm.

Mohan Lal Sharma, president of the Shri Krishan Mandir and organiser of the day's musical entertainment, said: "I think today has gone very well and I am happy that so much hard work has paid off.

"We have attracted some top talent to Wolverhampton for this event and I am sure everyone has had a good time.

"Diwali is a time to celebrate and I am pleased that people from all backgrounds came along and enjoyed themselves."

The Diwali festival signifies the victory of light over darkness and is a celebration of light, colour and life.

This year, Wolverhampton Council partnered the Shri Krishan Mandir and Shri Durga Bhawan temples to put the event together. Graiseley ward councillor Elias Mattu said: "I think we have shown once again that Wolverhampton knows how to celebrate Diwali.

"It is fantastic to see people from all walks of life come together to celebrate a festival that is all about happiness. Everyone involved in organising the event this year has really done a great job."
