The Through All Seasons exhibition by painter Lawrence Coulson will launch at Castle Galleries in Wolverhampton on October 10.

It will take art-lovers on a tour of the British landscape through countryside scenes and calming coastal settings.

Each oil painting has been fashioned to create a sense of serenity and atmosphere through the use of different colours and techniques.

Mr Coulson will be at the gallery, in Victoria Street, from 1pm to 4pm on the opening day to reveal his works.

Speaking of the collection, he said: "My landscape paintings focus on the atmosphere of particular locations rather than the geographical characteristics. I am interested in what they make the viewer feel and what they can draw out of the painting.

"Collectors in the past have employed wonderful phrases to describe the work, ranging from 'escapist', 'romantic' and 'melancholy' – all of which pretty much grasp what I am trying to achieve."

Mr Coulson only started to paint as a hobby at the age of 21 – and actually only achieved a D grade in art at O-Level.

But his father, celebrated artist Gerald Coulson, encouraged to him to have a go at painting and set him the exercise of copying a Victorian landscape.

He gave his son a few tips and pointers but then left him to get on with it. Mr Coulson found he enjoyed the processes of trying to match his fledgling technique with what the old master had created – and the end result proved to be good enough to encourage him to do more.

In 2003, he was honoured as the best-selling published artist by the Art & Framing Industry Business Awards hosted by the Fine Art Trade Guild.

The previous year he was presented with the Up and Coming Artist Award.

He is best known for his oil paintings which bring open spaces and skylines to life.

Through All Seasons features notably more man-made structures and human activity than previous collections by the artist.

He takes particular influence from his local landscape near the Cambridgeshire Fens and names 19th century Romantic painters J.M.W Turner and John Constable, along with his father, as important influences.

Mark Horton, gallery manager for Castle Galleries said: "Throughout his successful career, we have seen Lawrence diversify in subject matter whilst retaining the technique and flair that has earned him critical acclaim.

"Starting first by applying his base paint with a large brush, he then uses his fingertips to blend and push colour into the canvas.

"This physical interaction with his work is a Coulson trademark, with the lightness of touch and delicacy of the merging colours enhancing the finish."

Prices for the limited edition prints start from £395. To find out more about the artist and to see more of his work go to his website here.
