Friends, family and former school teachers of the West Midlands’ latest X Factor hopeful are backing their boy all the way as he bids to emulate the success of One Direction’s Liam Payne.
Jay Scott from Wolverhampton is part of the Kingsland Road band in the final 11 of the ITV series after impressing judges with their version of the Wham hit Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.
After the performance the band were told by judge and mentor Gary Barlow their performances would be the ones ‘people will be looking forward to every week’.
The 19-year-old singer, who grew up in Eastfields, said he has been overwhelmed with messages of goodwill from people in his hometown. “Just hearing how many people back home are rooting for the band makes me feel really happy,” he said.
Staff and students at Jay’s former school the South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy are so impressed with his performances so far they have produced a tribute wall in his honour. Assistant principal Jane Dickens said: “His relentless drive was there for all to see from a young age, and he deserves to be where he is.”
