Dreamboats and Petticoats
Wolverhampton Grand Theatre
Review by Alison Norton
It was a trip down memory lane at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, as Dreamboats and Petticoats rock and rolled its way into town.
Based on the million selling album of the same name, this high-energy, uplifting musical certainly has the feel-good factor and the simple story is really only an excuse to string together a whole host of hits from the ’50′s and ’60′s, including Runaround Sue, The Wanderer, Teenager in Love and Dream Lover to name but a few.
The extraordinarily young cast is headed by David Ribi as Bobby, who was in fine voice, with an outstanding vocal range and Samantha Dorrance as Laura, his sweet 16-year old. It is hard to believe where such talent comes from at such a tender age, but these youngsters certainly know how to deliver musical theatre at it’s very best. Their harmonies are tight, perfectly pitched and a delight to hear.
Ben James-Ellis and Katie Birthill are perfectly cast as would be lead singer and lothario Norman and his gal, Sue, whilst Josh Little as Ray gives and outstanding acapella performance of Poetry in Motion.
All said however, the performance of the evening must surely go to the individual characters within the superb band on stage, who transported everyone back in time with ease.
A well-deserved standing ovation was the perfect end to an evening of exceptional entertainment. Runs until Saturday.
