Guys and Dolls is one of the best shows for amateurs to perform as it has lots of small roles, some wonderful tunes and a story based on the colourful characters found in Damon Runyon's tales of New York low life.

South Staffs Musical Theatre Company have produced a real winner with this year's offering for there are some excellent singing and acting performances.

Praise first, though, for the clever and stylish set which captures the bright lights of Broadway.

Simon McGee plays inveterate gambler Sky Masterson who bets that he can take mission girl Sarah Brown (Lucy-Ellen Parker) to Havana – where she becomes intoxicated both by him and the local alcohol.

Both are nicely judged performances, while Alf Rai's portrayal of Nicely Nicely Johnson is larger than life .

Director Karl Veltman and choreographer Maria Shee have made sure that the show has great pace and vitality.

Runs until Saturday. Tickets, which cost from £6.50 to £18, are available from the Grand Theatre Box Office on 01902 429212 or visit www.grandtheatre.info
