Six years later the musical opened on Broadway and proved every bit as successful as the movie, with the show pulling in more than one million US dollars some weeks.

Now the show comes to Birmingham’s New Alexandra Theatre, opening on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, and running until Saturday, October 15, 2011.

It is the 2011 Olivier Award winning show’s first time in the city.

The all-singing, all-dancing romantic comedy is created by Tony Award-winning director and Olivier Award-nominated choreographer Jerry Mitchell.

He said: “I’ve had a wonderful time getting to know this amazing cast. Hopefully you will get a chance to see Legally Blonde and go home pretty in pink.”

The show tells the tale of Elle Woods whose boyfriend, Warner, dumps her. She then decides to follow him to Harvard Law School and win him back.

With some help from new-found friends Paulette, Emmett and her Chihuahua Bruiser, she learns that it’s so much better to be smart.

During its first year on Broadway in 2007, Legally Blonde the Musical earned seven Tony Award nominations, 10 Drama Desk Award nominations and an Outer Critics Circle Award.

The show also ranked in the top 10 for the most requested Ticketmaster Arts and Theatre Events for 2007.

There are 18 songs in the show and Elle sings 16 of them as well as having 19 costume changes.

Jerry, who directed and choreographed the Broadway production of Legally Blonde the Musical, began his career as associate choreographer to Michael Bennett on Scandal and Jerome Robbins on Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.

Since that time his many Broadway choreography credits include the revivals of The Rocky Horror Show and You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown as well as Gypsy and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. His film credits include In and Out, Drop Dead Gorgeous and Scent of a Woman.

The lead of Elle is played by Faye Brookes. Faye graduated from Guildford School Of Acting with a BA (hons) Degree in Musical Theatre. She performed in shows such as Anyone Can Whistle, Match Girls and Aladdin.

Before graduating from drama school Faye made her West End debut in the musical Grease as Sandy.

The role of Emmett is played by Iwan Lewis. Iwan graduated from Guildford School of Acting in 2010. Since graduating he has played Nick Piazza in Fame for Bronowski Productions, and Private Augenti in Passion at The Donmar Warehouse, which marked his West End debut.

He has just finished playing the role of Lemar in Godspell at the Union Theatre.

Former Brookside and Celebrity Big Brother star Claire Sweeney also stars as Paulette.

Tickets for Legally Blonde range from £19.50-£64.25. Call 0844 8713011 or visit www.alexandratheatre.org.uk
