Globe production of Anne Boleyn in Birmingham
Tuesday 27th September 2011, 2:52PM BST.
English Touring Theatre is to present the Shakespeare’s Globe production of Howard Brenton’s play Anne Boleyn at the Nex Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham.
Compelling, witty and often laugh-out-loud funny, this celebration of a great English heroine, Anne Boleyn leaps cunningly between generations to reveal the debt the outrageous yet scholarly James I owed to Anne when he reconciled England’s religious factions by creating his common, ‘authorised’ Bible.
Hunting through an old chest, the newly crowned James discovers the controversial legacy of Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII’s notorious second wife.
Time jumps back 70 years, when the witty and flirtatious Anne was in love with Henry, but also with the most dangerous ideas of her day.
Conspiring with the exiled William Tyndale, she plots to make England Protestant. For ever.
Following two sell-out London seasons, two powerhouses of great theatre – English Touring Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe, join forces to stage this vivid and vibrant production, gripping, rich in humour and shot through with sublime chamber music and visual imagery.
Anne Boleyn will be performed at the New Elexandra Theatre from Tuesday, March 20, 2012, to Saturday, March 24, 2012. Performances are at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday and 7.30pm evenings. Tickets cost £10.50-£30.50, subject to transaction and booking fees from the box office on 0844 871 3011 or online at www.atgtickets.com/birmingham
