Michael McIntyre’s ‘secret’ Birmingham gig
Friday 23rd September 2011, 11:28AM BST.
Sshhhh. Don’t tell anyone. It’s supposed to be a secret, well, sort of . . . one of the UK’s best-loved and most successful comics, Michael McIntyre, will swop arena-sized stages for the intimacy of Birmingham’s Glee Club on Monday (September 26, 2011).
The star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Mock The Week, 8 Out Of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You will be testing out material for a tour that is scheduled to play out to hundreds of thousands of fans next year.
McIntyre’s Work In Progress will air for one-night only on Monday at a venue that has also provided a similar ‘preview’ service for Lee Evans, in recent times.
It’s worth catching McIntyre while you can.
When he takes to the road in 2012 he’ll be playing dates from August through to December, with six nights planned at Birmingham’s NIA Arena and successive evenings in other major venues, including arenas in Cardiff, London, Sheffield, Manchester, Belfast, Newcastle, Dublin and Liverpool.
McIntyre’s rise has been meteoric since his big break at the Royal Variety Performance in 2006.
His debut DVD, Live and Laughing, was the fastest selling of all time, only to be eclipsed by his second, Hello Wembley, that sold over 1.4 million copies and was the 2009 Christmas number one.
A similar DVD, planned following his 2012 tour, is likely to be similarly successful.
McIntyre has become an established part of the mainstream and in December 2010 he was announced as a judge for Britain’s Got Talent in 2011, alongside David Hasselhoff and Amanda Holden. But this week the comic announced he was quitting the BGT judging panel.
