Reader recommends – Midlands nights out
Wednesday 31st August 2011, 11:10AM BST.
Every week, we’ll be seeking your recommendations of the best places to eat, drink and enjoy yourselves across the West Midlands and Staffordshire.
We asked our Twitter and Facebook followers to name the best places for a great night out on the town in the region. Here are some of their choices:
Chicago Rock Cafe, Walsall
A relaxed cafe by day, Chicago Rock doubles up as a party venue at night – with live entertainment also regularly on offer.
Claire Dee told us on her Twitter page that if she is in a soul/Motown mood, then Chicago’s is the place to go.
Claire also recommended the Royal London in Wolverhampton for pre-dance drinks, as they offer some cheap deals as well as playing good music.
HMV Institute, Digbeth
A venue with a great history, the Digbeth Institute started life as a Methodist church before becoming a popular music venue that has seen bands like Pink Floyd and the Arctic Monkeys play.
It also hosts regular club nights, with Full Moon due to take place every Wednesday night from Sept 21st, Panic! every other Saturday and more beside.
Chrisy Morris told us on our Facebook page that it is the place to go for the “harder generation.”
Woody’s Music bar, Hednesford
Offering live music, special all-day events as well as the usual ‘beer and cheer’, Woody’s offers something different in Cannock.
Lee Morrall recommended Woody’s on our Facebook page, describing it as an “awesome venue.”
Gorgeous, Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton’s biggest gay night-out, Gorgeous opened in September 2010 to offer the city an LGBT venue to rival nearby towns.
Spread over two floors, Gorgeous hosts a number of regular club nights including ‘The Pink Pounder’ and ‘WhatEver.’
Tracey Evans-Baker told us on our Facebook page that it is “fun, friendly with cheap alcohol, good food and it is open until late.”
The Old Brown Jug, Newcastle-under-Lyme
This friendly, family-run traditional public house offers plenty of regular live entertainment, including Jazz & Blues nights, Indie Rock bands plus a monthly Salsa night.
They also serve a good drink – The Jug has been named in the Good Beer Guide for the last eight years running.
Sam Schofield said on Twitter: “It’s my local. Plays great music. Pours a tasty pint. And has a wide selection of whisky.”
