Reader recommends – Family days out
Wednesday 27th July 2011, 9:00AM BST.
Every week, we’ll be looking for your recommendations of the best places to eat, drink and enjoy yourselves across the West Midlands and Staffordshire.
This week, we asked our Twitter and Facebook followers to name the best places for family days out in the region and the suggestions came flying in. Here are the most popular destinations that they chose:
Black Country Living Museum
Historic buildings from across the Black County have been moved and authentically rebuilt at the museum to create a tribute to the traditional skills and enterprise of the people that once lived in the heart of industrial Britain.
And our readers voted in their droves for this family day out which transports you back in time and brings the canal-side village back to life.
@teacup_cupcake said on Twitter: “It has canal trips, coal mines, old houses, traditional fish, chips and sweets. Perfect.”
Wolverhampton Art Gallery
Also recommended by our Twitter followers was Wolverhampton Art Gallery on Lichfield Street, which offers free admission.
Currently they are displaying the Home of Metal exhibition, celebrating the Black Country as home of heavy metal as well as various other art displays.
@lovelylemons said in a review on her blog: “Wolverhampton Art Gallery provides a relaxing, cultured and cheap day out.”
Stafford Castle
Overlooking the town of Stafford, the 19th century stone building dates back to around 1090.
It may not be an obvious choice for a family day out, but every summer there are a number of events including tea parties, family fun days and archery.
@childcareisfun said on Twitter: “It’s free and great for picnics, hide and seek fun and flying kites on a windy day, all to a fabulous backdrop.”
Dudley Zoo
With hundreds of animals including lions, kangaroos and Inca the black bear, Dudley Zoo is a popular destination for families.
Situated around the grounds of the 11th century Dudley Castle, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
Steve Briscoe recommended Dudley Zoo for a family day out on our Facebook page, describing it as a “top class place.”
The Public, West Bromwich
Run by Sandwell Arts Trust, The Public offers art exhibitions, music, theatre and dance events and a host of interactive features that are great for kids.
Entrance is free and there is plenty to do to keep the whole family entertained.
@lovelylemons said in a review on her blog: “It’s a far cry from the traditional art gallery, a visit here is very hands-on and interactive and the sense of diversity is definitely not limited to the local-inspired artwork.”
