Erasmus Darwin’s story brought to life in Lichfield
Tuesday 26th July 2011, 3:31PM BST.
The fascinating world of Lichfield’s famous son Erasmus Darwin was brought to life in his home town.
Local drama group Intimate Theatre performed a play called Meet The Darwins highlighting his achievements.
The grandfather of Charles Darwin, Erasmus was a great scientist in his own right.
He declined King George III’s invitation to become his personal physician in order to stay in Lichfield where he went on to form the Lunar Society with Matthew Boulton, Josiah Wedgwood, and James Watt which became the main intellectual powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in England.
Visitors to Erasmus Darwin House in Beacon Street at the weekend were treated to shows every 30 minutes.
The hour-long performances written by the company’s director David Titley revolved around five friends, including Anna Seward, Mary Parker and Dr Small, who told their personal tales of the famous scientist and poet.
Curator Alison Wallis said: “He made a significant impact on the residents of Lichfield which the performances brought out.”
