Horrible Histories – The Awful Egyptians
New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
By Sarah Moran
Birmingham Stage Company took on no mean feat – transferring the hit books and TV series Horrible Histories from the page and small screen to the stage.
Popular among youngsters for its humour and gory details, the light-hearted look at the past is a winner with parents as it teaches without preaching, and throws up weird and wonderful facts.
The show took us to the land of the pharaohs, whose pyramids covered the equivalent of eight football pitches. They had servants killed so they could join them on the journey to the afterlife and took their cats.
The cast of five leapt from explorers to peasants, architects to gods and mummies.
There were amusing songs, witty rhymes and a funeral chant which got people up and out of their seats.
A guide on how to mummify a body was complete with internal organs thrown around and 3D glasses helping the audience on a journey into a tomb, having rocks and a scarab beetle hurled at them on the way.
The show delivered fun facts and interesting insights with lots of laughter.
The Awful Egyptians alternates with The Ruthless Romans until July 2.
