Concert review by Shaun Jepson
The splitting up of G4 in 2007 seems to have been a blessing in disguise for the group’s former high tenor Jonathan Ansell.
He has gone on to have a successful solo career and last night the 29-year-old was afforded a standing ovation at the Grand.
Throughout the show, he belted out a mixed-bag of operatic hits and pop songs with the help of Helena Blackman, from How do you Solve a Problem like Maria? two male vocalists and a small band.
Ansell opened the first half with Queen’s classic Somebody To Love, before really showing off his natural vocal range with Bohemian Rhapsody and later, Who Wants To Live Forever.
He delighted the crowd when he jumped down and sang directly to adoring fans before being quizzed during a question and answer session.
But his best work was during his performances alongside Blackman. The pair sang a range of operatic numbers before really turning in a fantastic performance of Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé’s iconic song, Barcelona.
Ansell later posted on Twitter: “I loved tonight’s show. The best audience so far for this tour.”
