Dylan Moran
New Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
Review by Diane Davies
Belligerent, dark, befuddled and often inebriated. Dylan Moran has earned himself a rather unappealing image thanks to the comedy series Black Books and roles in such films as Run Fatboy Run.
It is a persona he is happy to play up to, ambling on to stage apparently unsure of the day, vaguely aware of having been in Birmingham before and stumbling over the opening of his show.
But the mask soon begins to slip as bumbling Moran throws out in his Emerald Isle drawl, observations on such heavyweight topics as politics, religion, a hi-tech and disaffected youth and the universe – or Brian Cox.
The audience, and potential hecklers, would be mistaken in failing to appreciate that Moran is in complete control of the night.
Hecklers are cut short, a would-be snapper told what to do with their camera and coughing admonished.
He takes off on a tangent in fury at two chatting pals at the front of the theatre. He later informs us they were thrown out.
The second half was a little more light-hearted. Discussing not the issues of the world but more the battle of the sexes.
The show is over too soon, literally! Less than an hour and a half after taking to the stage (including the interval) Moran makes his exit.
Quality rather than quantity perhaps. He does return, goes but then changes his mind and throws in a final anecdote.
* Dylan Moran is at the New Alexander theatre again tonight.
