Jedward at Birmingham Symphony Hall – review

Jedward concert review

Birmingham Symphony Hall.

Well, who’d have thought it?

Twelve months after being bounced off the X Factor by a relieved Simon Cowell, Jedward sprung onstage at a packed Symphony Hall like bona fide pop stars.

And, having had a hit single and released their first album, John and Edward Grimes are taking everything in their stride and proving — beyond any lingering doubt — that you don’t need to be able to sing to be a success.

Good news for Wagner, the dud from Dudley, you might think. Not really. Because Jedward have built their fame, and rapidly growing fortune, on the real X factor that few of Cowell’s products possess — likeability.

Bounding around the stage in uber trendy military chic, twin-peak quiffs higher than ever and white plastic shades, the brothers certainly look the part.

True, their singing isn’t great but their dancing is better. It’s still not perfect, but that’s all part of the charm. This was their Planet Jedward tour and the fans came dressed in their own range of wacky outfits.

On Saturday, they were greeted with screams and squeals of delight as they put their own take on, classics such as Vanilla Ice’s Ice Ice Baby and the Black Eyed Peas I Got a Feeling, right through to a hilariously brilliant theme from Ghostbusters.

Who ya gonna call rubbish now, Simon?
