Have a heart for Tasheka’s Dorothy dream
Monday 29th March 2010, 11:30AM BST.
People across the West Midlands are being urged to pick up the phone to help keep a Wolverhampton mum-of-two’s dreams of West End stardom alive.
Tasheka Coe’s hopes of playing the role of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz are hanging by a thread, as she waits to see if she will make it through to the next stage of Lord Andrew Lord Webber’s latest talent search.
More than 9,000 girls auditioned in the hope of bagging the coveted role made famous by Judy Garland
.But talented Tasheka, who is mum to 21 month old twins Tia and Dylan, made it through to the top 20.
On Saturday night, millions tuned in to Over the Rainbow to watch the 20 finalists sing in front of a expert panel made up of singer Charlotte Church, actress Sheila Hancock, EastEnder John Partridge and Lord Lloyd Webber.
Although Tasheka failed to make it into the judges’ top 10, she could still go through if she wins enough public support to become the wildcard entry.
Family and friends are calling on people to support 28-year-old Tasheka, who lives in Tettenhall Wood with husband David.
Sister Keisha, of Merry Hill, was in the audience to cheer her on.
She said: “We need people to pick up the phone and support our girl who is the only person from the Midlands in the competition. We’re all so, so proud of her.”
Keisha, aged 26, who works as a hairdresser, said: “I’ve never been to anything like that before. It felt like there were thousands of cameras and I don’t know about her but I was really nervous.”
Contestants on Saturday night’s show were split into groups of four and asked to perform a pop number and a song from a musical.
Tasheka’s group sang Taylor Swift’s Love Story, as well as the emotionally-charged Tell Me It’s Not True from Blood Brothers. After both performances,
Tasheka was praised by Sheila Hancock who said she was an interesting performer, while Charlotte Church said her musical performance was “absolutely gorgeous”.
The Birmingham Midshires worker is a member of Wolverhampton MusCom and has performed in shows across Wolverhampton, including at the Grand Theatre.
