George Osborne on the selfie bandwagon in Cannock

Political selfies are everywhere. They have not just permeated the General Election campaign – they have taken over.

No longer, it seems, do voters want to berate their local candidates or party leaders in the street. In the age of smart phones, they'd much rather awkwardly huddle together for the snap before uploading it to Facebook or Twitter to feed their insatiable appetite for 'likes'.

This selfie with George Osborne was taken by staff at Cannock engineering firm ATP. The Chancellor spent no fewer than three attempts to take the picture, saying: "We really could do with one of those selfie sticks." The Prime Minister, always happy to pose for pictures, has also spoken about his 'frustration' at the craze.

Mr Cameron said: "Everyone wants a selfie rather than a conversation, and sometimes that's frustrating, particularly with party activists.

"I want to know what they are finding on the doorsteps, but actually you are too busy having your picture taken."

But Mr Cameron has fallen foul of this, infamously posing for a selfie with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and US President Barack Obama at the memorial service for Nelson Mandela.
