Conservative does an Obama to settle birth certificate row

A Tory candidate vying to retain Cannock Chase for the party has released a copy of her own birth certificate – to counter claims that she has no ties to Staffordshire.

Amanda Milling took a leaf out of US President Barack Obama's book by publishing the certificate.

The 40-year-old chose to do so because she said opponents and critics were continuously claiming she had been 'parachuted' in from Lancashire, where she had been living prior to being chosen as candidate and where she was a councillor. Her Labour opponent Janos Toth is a district councillor in Cannock Chase and was previously the deputy leader of the local authority.

"I would like to take this opportunity to clarify once and for all this matter – that I was born and brought up in Burton-upon-Trent, here in Staffordshire. I have a copy of my birth certificate, which I am more than happy to share with the paper and will bring with me to the various hustings in the forthcoming weeks."

Mr Toth said: "Amanda Milling is a parachuted in candidate. She was representing part of Lancashire before she was selected."

Other candidates in Cannock Chase are Ian Jackson for the Lib Dems, Grahame Wiggin for UKIP and Paul Woodhead for the Greens. Aidan Burley stood down as MP.
