Members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) walked out in a long-running dispute over school funding, pay and conditions and were joining rallies and marches.

Hundreds of schoolchildren in the Black Country and Staffordshire will be told to stay away from school on Tuesday because of a national teachers strike.

Wolverhampton

Of the 75 schools in Wolverhampton maintained by the City of Wolverhampton Council, 43 have said they intend to be open as usual.

Eight schools have told the council they will be closed:

  • Whitgreave Infant

  • East Park Primary

  • Deyncourt Primary

  • Eastfield Primary

  • Christ Church (Church of England) Infant and Nursery

  • Penn Fields

  • Penn Hall and Bushbury Hill Primary schools.

Four pupil referral units, the Kingston Centre, the Orchard Centre, Midpoint Centre and the Braybrook Centre, will also be closed.

Twenty schools will be partially open: Springdale Infant, Castlecroft Primary, Westacre Infant, Loxdale Primary, Long Knowle Primary, Wood End Primary, Stow Heath Primary, Lanesfield Primary, Uplands Junior, Woodthorne Primary, St Alban's Church of England Primary, Christ Church (Church of England) Junior, Trinity Church of England Primary, Edward the Elder Primary, Moreton Community, Tettenhall Wood, Graiseley Primary, Goldthorn Park Primary, Dovecotes Primary and St Patrick's Catholic Primary schools.

Julien Kramer, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Director of Education, said: "This is national dispute which we hope will be resolved as soon as possible.

"Headteachers and governors are doing everything they can to minimise inconvenience to families and to ensure educational continuity, and we have asked schools to advise parents as soon as is practical what impact it may have on their child so that they can make alternative arrangements where necessary."
