Should pupils be allowed to go on holiday in term? Sandwell Council considers rule change
Council bosses will open talks with schools across Sandwell to debate children going on holiday during term time.
Sandwell Council cabinet will discuss whether changes to school term dates could be made after it was revealed Isle of Wight Council is set to challenge a high court ruling not to fine a father after he took his daughter on an unauthorised term time holiday earlier this year.
Councillor Simon Hackett, Cabinet member for children's services, said: "It is an issue that is raised across the country as the price of travel is extortionate during holiday time.
"We have spoke to schools in Sandwell but are waiting for the outcome nationally."
Sandwell Council leader Steve Eling said there would not be a 'local easy solution' to the ongoing problem.
"This has been a contentious issue for years as attendance drops and Ofsted goes to the schools and it becomes a war zone," he said.
"But there is not a local easy solution because this is a national problem.
"It has come to a head going through the courts and we will have to see what will come out of the other end of that.
"But there are a number of valuable points around this so we will wait and see what develops on a national level."
