Flooding in the West Midlands: Schools closed in wake of heavy rain

There are school closures this morning in the aftermath of flash flooding which hit the West Midlands last night.

Heavy rain battered the region yesterday afternoon leaving roads looking like rivers and causing lots of damage.

This morning George Salter Academy, Holyhead School, Sandwell Academy, St John Wall Catholic School, St Joseph and St Theresa Catholic Primary, The Phoenix Collegiate, West Heath Primary School, Grestone Primary School and Heathfield Primary School are all affected.

George Salter Academy - closed for years 7-10. Yearr 11 and sizth form with exams to report as normal.

Grestone Primary School - completely closed.

Heathfield Primary School - completely closed.

Holyhead School - closed to all students except years 11, 12 and 13. Exams and lessons will continue as normal for these students.

Sandwell Academy - only open to year 11 students and sixth form students with exams.

St John Wall Catholic School - closed to all pupils except for year 11 who need to attend their maths examination.

St Joseph and St Theresa Catholic Primary - completely closed

The Phoenix Collegiate - closed to year 7, 8 and 9 students.

Welford Primary School - completely closed.

West Heath Primary School - complete closure.[/breakout]

During rush hour people reported huge delays in getting home form work with hours added on to their journeys because of the terrible driving conditions.

Cars were left abandoned and there were even some rescues form those who had become stuck in flood water.

The Wulfrun Centre in Wolverhampton had to be evacuated in the afternoon as water was seen pouring through the roof.
