Walsall councillor Doug James has criticised the borough's council for its 'not-good-enough' schools.

A report by Ofsted last week revealed one in four establishments are falling below the required standard.

The report also noted that improvements had been made since the last inspection in 2014 but councillor James was less than impressed, describing Ofsted's conclusion of 'a great deal of work is still required' as 'understatement of the year 2016'.

He added: "Apparently, things are improving. That is said every year. Imagine if that were true we should have the best schools in the world by now. Instead Walsall Council remains 143rd worst from 150. This is not good enough."

The council has said the report 'rightly reflects the hard work' of officers and staff and it has a clear vision, direction and mandate for improvement.
