The former Heath Park School in Prestwood Road, is being demolished following the opening of its new £24 million building nearby.

The school has been rebuilt as part of the £270m Building Schools for the Future programme.

The new building, which is located on the same street, opened its doors to 1,300 pupils and 140 teaching and support staff for the first time in September.

It boasts a 250-person capacity lecture theatre, a film and media suite and fully equipped food technology room, as well as state-of-the-art science labs and art rooms.

Meanwhile, the demolition of the remainder of the old school is underway which is enabling work to begin on a new sports hall.

The steel frame has now been erected and roof works are underway, with the sports hall due to be finished in time for the autumn term. There will also be new tennis courts, running track with long jump and triple jump pit, 3G pitch, social areas and car parking.

Wolverhampton's education boss, Councillor Claire Darke, said: "The contrast between the old and the new schools is incredible, and shows what a difference the Building Schools for the Future programme has made to secondary education in Wolverhampton."

The Building Schools for the Future programme has seen all 25 secondary education providers in Wolverhampton either rebuilt or modernised.

Other schools to have benefited under the scheme include Deansfield Community School, Aldersley High, New Park, North East Wolverhampton Academy, Penn Hall, Smestow, St Peter's Collegiate and Wolverhampton Girls' High School.
