Mark Robertson took over as principal in May 2013 following a scathing Ofsted report the previous year.

Now rated good by the watchdog, the college is in the top 15 per cent for success rates for 16-18-year-olds and runs a host of classes so popular that they have waiting lists.

Emma Reynolds, MP for Wolverhampton North East, said: "Mark has done a fantastic job leading City of Wolverhampton College, turning it around, and making it one of the best colleges in the country.

"He has built strong links with local businesses in order tailor the college's courses to provide young people with the skills employers will need in the years and decades to come."

"I am sad to see him leave, but I wish him luck and every success in his new appointment."

Mr Robertson has left to take the reins at Barking and Dagenham College in Essex.

Claire Boliver has stepped into the role of principal at the City of Wolverhampton College, which is looking to build a new campus near the city centre.
